Orthopedic surgery is the area of surgery involving the musculoskeletal system. Procedures that can be performed include ACL reconstruction, arthroscopy, carpal tunnel release, hand and foot surgery, joint replacement, fracture repairs with and without hardware, rotator cuff repair and sports medicine.
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to look at the inside of a joint with minimally invasive instruments and small incisions. Arthroscopy can be used to treat, diagnose or monitor a disease or effectiveness of a treatment. Arthroscopy is commonly performed on the knee or shoulder, however it can also be performed on the ankle, hip, elbow and wrist.
Total hip replacement surgery replaces the upper end of the thigh bone (femur) with a metal ball and resurfaces the hip socket in the pelvic bone with a metal shell and plastic liner. Total hip replacement surgery replaces damaged cartilage with new joint material. Joint replacement surgery is recommended when hip pain and loss of function become severe, and medicines and other treatments no longer relieve the pain. Most artificial hip last 10-20 years or longer.
Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) hip replacement surgery allows orthopedic surgeons to make only one small incision on the front portion of the hip, instead of the traditional, two-incision, posterior location. This technique does not require the muscle or soft tissue to be cut during the surgery which results in decreased blood loss and post-op rehabilitation time.
In knee replacement surgery, the ends of the damaged thigh and lower leg bones and usually the kneecap are capped with artificial surfaces lined with metal and plastic. Knee replacement surgery replaces damaged cartilage with new joint material. Joint replacement surgery is recommended when knee pain and loss of function is severe, and medications and other treatments no longer relieve the pain.
In shoulder replacement surgery, the surgeons replace the ends of the damaged upper arm bone and usually the shoulder bone (scapula) or cap them with artificial surfaces. Shoulder replacement surgery replaces damaged cartilage with new joint material. Joint replacement surgery is recommended when shoulder pain and loss of function is severe, and medications and other treatments no longer relieve the pain.
